After losing their debut on opening day, the burden weighed heavily on the German team. Losing the match against Spain today would have destroyed their dream of reaching the playoffs.
Nicolas Kujat was sure that the main problem against Poland has been the nervous team. Learning from this experience plus changing the lines dramatically showed the German team in a much better light today. Only 3 minutes and Spain knew what to expect. Lukas Sigrist was the first to score, Wenzel Flemming the second. Obviously, the personal changes brought the intended effects, the German team dominated Spain clearly. They played fast, clever and effective. In the 17th and 18th minute of the first period, both, Sascha Herlt, and Nicolas Kujat used their chances as good as they could, bringing the German team into a comfortable lead of four goals.
Spain used the first break to reorganize and motivate themselves again. They started far more powerful than they did in the first period. Just a few minutes after a second goal of Germany’s Nicolas Kujat, Steffan Peduzzi deked goalkeeper Nils Hallerstede before assisting Pablo Lopez. Spain fought hard and showed that they are able to play excellent Floorball, too. Solo runs and shots of skilled players which gave Spain the score, even in this second match of the tournament. They did not seem to work as a team very well. The Spanish team was nominated spontaneously after Japan decided not to take part in this tournament following the tragic earthquake and tsunami. Coach Carlos Lopez said “We actually had our first real training this morning”, which should make clear that there was not as much time as it would have taken them to prepare properly. During the last minutes of the second period, it was the German captain Erik Schuschwary and domestic 1st Bundesliga player Sascha Herlt who scored another two goals.
The last period started 2:7, Spain seemed to give up from the beginning on. Being faced a 5-goal-strong gap, they were not motivated enough to catch on. Both teams managed to score once in the last period, leading to a well-deserved final score of 3:8.
German Coach Kristof Klein said the team relaxed after the match yesterday thinking of the positive things to come and being sure of having managed it very well. To reach the semifinal, Germany needs to beat Canada tomorrow or, if Spain beats Poland, a stand-off will be enough.
